Claude Code 2.1.274 Fixes Death Loops and Goal Loss
We break down Claude Code 2.1.274’s biggest workflow fixes, including automatic repair for desynced tool calls, cleaner failure handling with slash rewind, and better goal persistence through context compaction.
Plus, a look at the new default Model Context Protocol client on Bedrock, Vertex, and Foundry, and how to keep legacy MCP setups running if you need them.
Chapter 1
Claude Code 2.1.274 Self Healing Tool Loops and Goal Persistence
James Turner
Brought to you by Jellypod AI. You know that absolute gut punch feeling when you are running a long agentic coding task in your terminal, and suddenly Claude Code gets trapped in a death loop? Just spinning its wheels, burning through API tokens, hitting four hundred bad request errors over and over because of an unexpected tool use id?
Lachlan Reed
Oh, mate, do not remind me! I had that happen in my shed last week. You just sit there watching the terminal scream red text at you, like a kangaroo staring into headlights, completely stuck!
James Turner
Exactly. Well, according to Anthropic's release notes for Claude Code version 2.1.274, that specific horror story is officially fixed. The transcript parser now automatically self heals desynced tool call records on the fly.
Lachlan Reed
Wait, self heals? How does it actually fix a corrupted transcript without just wiping your whole conversation history?
James Turner
So, when an unexpected tool use id mismatch happens, usually because a socket dropped or a background process got abruptly killed mid turn, the local transcript gets left with an orphaned tool call. In version 2.1.274, the client detects the payload mismatch and fixes the transcript structure in memory before making the next API call.
Lachlan Reed
Right, but what if the transcript is, er, completely mangled? Like beyond any automatic repair job?
James Turner
If it really cannot auto repair, instead of retrying endlessly, it halts cleanly and gives you an explicit error message with a hint to use the slash rewind command.
Lachlan Reed
Ah, slash rewind! That lets you step back just one turn, right? Prunes out that broken tool invocation so you do not lose your whole session context.
James Turner
Precisely! You pop back one step, keep your context intact, and just keep rolling. But that is not even the only huge workflow fix in 2.1.274.
Lachlan Reed
Oh yeah? What else dropped in this patch?
James Turner
They fixed goal persistence across context compaction. Previously, if you were running a complex multi step task with slash goal, and your session hit context compaction, resuming with the continue or resume flags could lose your active goal or trigger prompt is too long errors during secondary overflows.
Lachlan Reed
Wow, yeah, losing your active goal midway through a massive refactor is awful. So now that goal state actually survives compaction cycles properly?
James Turner
Exactly. Your goal directive stays locked in even when context compacts under heavy token load. Plus, Bedrock, Vertex, and Foundry installs now default to the v2 Model Context Protocol client.
Lachlan Reed
And if someone is running legacy HTTP or SSE Model Context Protocol servers on those platforms?
James Turner
They can just set MCP SDK GENERATION to v1 or MCP PROTOCOL NEGOTIATION to legacy in their environment settings.
Lachlan Reed
Mate, having auto healing transcripts and rock solid goal state is an absolute lifesaver for late night dev sessions. No more babysitting broken loops!
